Paul Cashin Architects Begins Construction for Chase Music Studio Near Andover, Hampshire

Building work has begun on our contemporary music studio project near Andover, Hampshire.  The project, which is to create a new workshop garage and attached garden music studio, received planning permission earlier this year and will be completed by December.

Extract from the description of the Music Studio scheme:

The client approached us to design a contemporary musicians studio space in their garden as part of a 1960’s bungalow renovation near Andover, Hampshire.

The brief required an economical approach to the project and included provisions for a suitable protective and acoustic environment for their baby grand piano with an adjoining garage/workshop to house their growing collection of classic cars. The studio should be of a contemporary design while visually being respectful of its surroundings and the existing house.

The cellular design of the building is located along the site boundary to allow for space to maintain side access into the garden. The garage space is constructed from brick and incorporates feature windows to provide an abundance of light to the workspace for the clients engine work shop, and clerestory fenestration for ventilation. In contrast, the music studio takes the form or a timber framed lean-to with openings looking out onto the garden.

Atmospherically, the use of a softer material, in this case timber, juxtaposes against the brick and creates a distinct divide in the architecture: the more utilitarian working environment against the more welcoming and comforting studio space. While the music studio is intended to act as a sort of sanctuary, with a feeling of being removed from the main house, it was important to establish a connection with the architecture’s context; to the garden and the natural environment outside. The glazed openings to the garden provide depth to the space which serves as both a visual backdrop and as creative inspiration.

Pragmatically, the oblique plan minimises sound reverberation and the entire space is acoustically insulated with built-in baffling and a large curtain for the glazed portions.

A raised decked route from the main house to a corner garden completes the scheme.
